What does all-inclusive include?

Your Mystic Whaler cruise includes breakfast, lunch, dinner, snacks and nonalcoholic beverages.  You are welcome to bring alcoholic beverages and soda aboard and to use the passenger ice chest to keep them cool. 

Can the crew accept tips?

Yes, crew tips are welcome and are not included in the price of your cruise.  At the end of each cruise several tip cans are placed on deck in which you can place your gratuity.

Are there organized shore excursions?

Once the Mystic Whaler comes into port your time is your own.  The crew loves to share their knowledge of the port of call but there are no organized excursions as such.  Often times, fellow passengers will explore the quaint harbor town together or share a sightseeing taxi tour that will take them farther afield.

What's a typical day like aboard?

8:30 pm - Night before cruise Boarding begins.

8:00 am - First day of cruise Boarding finalized. Breakfast served on deck and the Captain informs passengers of the port of destination and sailing schedule.

8:15 am - Cast off & motor south into Long Island Sound

8:30 am - Pass by Ledge Light Lighthouse & Avery Point Light

12:00 pm - Lunch served on deck.

4:00 pm - Arrive at port of destination. Time ashore.

6:30 pm - Dinner served on deck.

OVERNIGHT IN PORT

8:00 am - Breakfast on deck and the Captain informs passengers of the port of destination and sailing schedule.

EACH DAY OF SAILING ASSUMES THE STANDARD SCHEDULE SET ABOVE

3:00 pm - Last day of cruise Disembark.

Where will we go?

That depends on the type of sail you chose, though all trips are determined by the wind and the tide.  Each cruise begins with a narrated tour of the Thames River’s historic waterfront, including famous forts and lighthouses.

Daysails and Lobster Dinner Cruises explore the waters of Fisher's Island Sound.  Multi-day sails go farther "asea". The destination will be decided by the Captain depending on the winds and the tide.

A two day sail will include one port of call. If we sail east, the port will probably be Block Island, RI. If we sail west, the port will probably be Shelter Island, NY.

A three day sail will include two ports of call. If we sail east, we may visit Newport and Block Island in RI. If we sail west, we may visit Sag Harbor, NY, then Greenport, NY.

A five day sail will include 4 ports of call. We love to sail east as far as we can during the first day. We may go as far as the Elizabeth Islands off Massachusetts, Martha's Vineyard and Cuttyhunk. Other ports of call may be Newport, Bristol and Block Island, RI.

There are certain foods I can not eat. What can I do?

Let us know of any special dietary needs when you make your reservation. Our cook will make every effort to accommodate you.

We are unable to maintain a kosher kitchen.

Will we see whales?

The Mystic Whaler does not offer whale watching trips.  There are whales off the coast of Connecticut but they are further off-shore than we can sail. Keep your eyes open though.  We have seen seals, dolphins and even submarines!

What do we do if it rains?

"Bad weather" means different things to different people and we do sail rain or shine. Tarps are raised over the decks so our guests can enjoy the view and stay dry. The Great Room is also available below. Captain John and the crew always strive to provide a fun and memorable sailing experience in any type of weather.

In the event of hazardous weather conditions, the Captain will make the decision to remain in port until the conditions improve. Our passengers' safety and comfort are our top priority.

What can I do on the boat?

You can do as much or as little as you please. You are welcome to take a turn at the helm, receive a quick lesson in coastal navigation and course charting, make new friends and even help raise the sails to a rousing sea chantey. You can also sit back and read a good book, view our beautiful coastline and bask in the warmth of a tranquil harbor. Take a nap. Relax. Enjoy.

What should I wear?

Dress is very casual on the Mystic Whaler. It is smart to be prepared for warm days and cool nights and a stiff breeze. Bring a swim suit and a beach towel. There is a chance we will anchor for a swim. No special boat shoes are required.

Will I get seasick?

While it’s hard to judge each person's sensitivity to motion and the weather conditions for that day, Mystic Whaler typically experiences very calm waters and motion comparable to riding in a tour bus. However, because we do not have motion sickness remedies on board, if you are concerned about your comfort we would encourage you to choose a method that best suits your needs.
